According to fraud and forgery detectives from the Nassau County Police Department, an unknown man contacted his 86-year-old victim in Carle Place on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and claimed to be a lawyer representing his grandson after he was arrested for DWI.
The man stated that the accident occurred in Atlantic City, a pregnant woman in the second car was injured and taken to the hospital. The suspect told the victim the judge would only release his grandson for $7,500 cash.
Police said that the subject directed his victim to go to the bank, withdraw the money and call him back to arrange a location for the transaction.
The victim proceeded to contact his son to discuss the situation. They then reported the incident to the police and an investigation was launched that led to the arrest of Elvis Espinal-Duran, 30, who was arrested.
Espinal-Duran was taken into custody and charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, Oct. 24 at First District Court in Hempstead.
